# Online ordering for Glasgow takeaways and restaurants

Short answer: Glasgow City has 1,118 takeaway and sandwich businesses and 2,199 restaurants, cafés and canteens on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) register, more takeaways than any other UK council area. They're spread across 30 postcode districts, so a Glasgow ordering site needs delivery zones built around the Clyde and the motorways, not a single radius. Chefzi gives you your own commission-free ordering site: 3 months free, then £19 a month for cash or no-card payments, or £29 a month with online card payments through Stripe.

Hygiene in Scotland works differently

Glasgow is inspected under the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS), not the 0 to 5 scheme used in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. There are two results: Pass or Improvement Required, plus the separate "Eat Safe" award for businesses that go beyond the legal standard (only 2 Glasgow takeaways currently show it in the data). Displaying the certificate is voluntary in Scotland, but customers still look you up.

84.9% of inspected Glasgow takeaways hold a Pass, a little behind the Scottish average of 87.0%. Glasgow ranks 20th of 28 Scottish councils with 50 or more takeaways. If you have a Pass, show it on your ordering site. On the FSA register a pass looks the same whether you're on the Royal Exchange or in Robroyston, so presenting it clearly is an easy way to stand out.

Setting delivery zones in Glasgow

Half of Glasgow's takeaways sit more than 2.1 miles from the city's takeaway centre point. A 3-mile circle catches only about 70% of them, and you need 4.5 miles to reach 90%. In practice:

  • Don't draw one big circle. The Clyde splits the city and the bridges funnel traffic. A shop in Govanhill (G42) can reach Shawlands and Pollokshields (G41) faster than it can reach Partick, even though Partick is roughly the same distance away. Build zones from the districts you can actually reach in 25 to 30 minutes.
  • Use the motorways, but price for them. The M8 makes runs from the East End (G31, G32) to the city centre quick. Driving beyond it costs more, so set a higher delivery charge or minimum order for the outer ring (G21 Springburn, G52 Cardonald).
  • City centre (G1, G2, G3): most orders here are collections, office lunches and late finishes. Short prep times and an easy collection option matter more than wide delivery.
  • Tenement streets: for flats, ask for the flat number and the buzzer in the address. Failed drops cost you food and goodwill.

Chefzi's delivery zones work by postcode district or by radius, with a different fee and minimum order for each zone. You can run G41/G42 at one price and the far side of the river at another.

Late hours catering in Glasgow

To sell food to the public between 11pm and 5am in Scotland, you need a late hours catering licence under section 42 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982. This applies to takeaway as well as eat-in, and covers delivery orders served from your premises in those hours. Glasgow City Council's published policy says it won't generally grant hours beyond 4am in the city centre or 3am elsewhere. For premises in a tenement with flats above, the usual limit is midnight. Current fees are £97 for a temporary licence (up to 6 weeks) and £233 for three years (council fees page, checked 19 Oct 2026).

Set your ordering hours in Chefzi to match your licence, so customers can't place orders after your licence allows.

Glasgow

Questions from Glasgow kitchens.

Do I need a late hours catering licence just for delivery?

If food is sold to the public from your premises between 11pm and 5am, the section 42 licence applies, including takeaway and delivery. If you're unsure, ask Glasgow City Council's licensing team.

Can I show "5 stars" for hygiene in Glasgow?

No. Scotland uses Pass / Improvement Required under FHIS. Show your actual FHIS result and link to your FSA listing.

How big should my delivery area be?

Base it on drive time, not miles. Most Glasgow shops do best with 3 to 5 postcode districts on their own side of the Clyde, plus a priced outer zone.

Can I keep using Just Eat or Deliveroo?

Yes. Many owners keep a marketplace for discovery and send repeat customers to their own ordering link. Check your marketplace contract for any pricing-parity terms first.

How quickly can I go live?

Send the menu export. The rebuild is included. You'll need your menu, opening hours and delivery districts, and you should check the page before you change the public link.
