Portsmouth

Questions

Why are Portsmouth's takeaway ratings so low?

The data shows the premises themselves are the main issue: 87.3% of takeaways below a 5 scored below "good" on the condition of the building.

How does Portsmouth compare?

40.1% of rated takeaways have a 5, against 65.5% in the South East and 61.8% in England. The city ranks 58th of 59 South East councils.

Should I deliver to Cosham from Southsea?

Treat PO6 as a separate zone with a longer delivery time and a higher minimum. Getting off the island at peak times takes a while.

Do I need a licence after 11pm?

For hot food or drink, yes: a premises licence with late night refreshment.

# Online ordering for Portsmouth and Southsea takeaways

Short answer: Portsmouth has 219 takeaways on the FSA register, and its hygiene ratings are among the weakest in the South East. Only 40.1% of rated takeaways have a 5, against 65.5% across the region, putting the city 58th of 59 councils. Almost one in ten (9.6%) is rated 0 to 2. Most of the trade is on Portsea Island, and about a third is in Southsea. If you hold a 5 here, you're in a minority, and it's worth showing customers. Chefzi gives you a commission-free ordering site with no setup fee, free migration and the first month free. Your own domain is included.

The premises problem

These aren't old ratings. Most Portsmouth takeaways (125, or 57%) were rated in the last 12 months, and only 5.6% of ratings are over two years old. So the low scores reflect recent inspections.

An officer scores three areas, and a business needs no more than 5 in each to get a 5. In most of the cities we've looked at, the weakest area is food safety management. In Portsmouth it's the building. Of the 118 rated takeaways below a 5, 87.3% fell short on the condition of the premises. That covers cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation, pest control and facilities. Over half of all rated takeaways in the city (52.3%) scored below "good" on it. Hygienic handling (54.2%) and management (46.6%) came well behind.

That's useful, because premises problems have practical fixes:

  • Clean what the officer can see and reach: behind fryers, extraction canopies and filters, floor-wall joins, and the tops of fridges.
  • Repair before you redecorate. Damaged flooring, flaking paint, broken seals on chillers and gaps where pests get in are the kind of things officers note.
  • Hand washing and ventilation. A dedicated wash basin with hot water and soap, kept clear, and extraction that works.

Then ask the council for a re-rating inspection with photos or receipts as evidence. In England some councils charge for this. The officer will look at the whole business again, so the rating can go down as well as up.

Portsmouth's restaurants and cafés do better, with 60.4% rated 5.

Island delivery

Most of Portsmouth sits on Portsea Island, joined to the mainland by three main roads: the M275, the A3 (London Road) and the A2030 (Eastern Road). The trade is concentrated: the median takeaway is just a mile from the centre point and 81.6% are within 2 miles.

  • PO4 and PO5 (46 and 25): Southsea. "Southsea" appears in about 70 takeaway addresses, roughly a third of the city. Albert Road (12 across both districts), Fawcett Road and Highland Road lead. Fratton Park, home of Portsmouth FC, is in PO4, so expect slow roads on match days.
  • PO1 (46): city centre, Fratton and Portsea. Fratton Road and Commercial Road have 10 takeaways each, with Gunwharf Quays and the university nearby. Short, busy runs.
  • PO2 (43): North End and Stamshaw, led by London Road (22 takeaways, the busiest single street in the city on this count). PO2 and the smaller PO3 (Copnor and Hilsea) are the only districts with no takeaways rated 0 to 2.
  • PO6 (38): Cosham, Drayton and Paulsgrove, across Portsbridge Creek on the mainland. Havant Road and Cosham High Street lead. From Southsea it's a separate run through the island's exits, so give PO6 its own zone with a longer delivery time.

In Chefzi, delivery zones can be a radius, a postcode list or an area drawn on a map, each with its own fee, minimum order and delivery time. An island-only zone plus a priced mainland zone is a sensible start.

What's on the menu

By name, Chinese takeaways lead (30), then fish and chips (25), pizza (22), kebab (15) and cafés (15). That's an estimate, with 42% of names unclassified, but along with Plymouth it's one of only two of the 30 places we've profiled where Chinese comes first. For long Chinese menus, see the Chinese takeaway page. For kebab shops, see kebab shops.

Licensing and display

England doesn't make hygiene sticker display compulsory, but the FSA encourages it in the window and online. If you sell hot food or hot drink between 11pm and 5am, eat-in or takeaway, you need a premises licence covering late night refreshment under the Licensing Act 2003. In Portsmouth this comes from the city council's licensing office. Keep your online ordering hours inside your licensed hours.
