# Online ordering for Newcastle takeaways and restaurants

Short answer: Newcastle upon Tyne has 279 FSA-registered takeaways and 901 restaurants and cafés. Its takeaway trade is concentrated: NE6 (Byker, Heaton, Walker) and NE1 (the city centre) hold four in ten of them. Newcastle also has the highest share of pizza-named takeaways of any city in this series. With the Tyne marking the southern edge, delivery planning here is about bridges and the city centre, not distance. Chefzi gives you a commission-free ordering site: 3 months free, then £19 a month for cash or no-card payments, or £29 a month with online card payments through Stripe.

What's distinctive about Newcastle

Inspections are up to date. Only 10 takeaways (3.6%) are waiting for a first rating, and more than half were inspected in the past year. That's a much more current picture than Liverpool (35% awaiting) or Glasgow (22%). The rating customers see for you is probably recent, which makes it a stronger trust signal in both directions.

Ratings are spread out. 58.7% are rated 5, below the North East figure of 66.3%. 8.6% are on 0 to 2, above the English rate of 5.8%. Newcastle ranks 10th of 12 North East councils on 5s. If you're on a 5, say so prominently. Local customers have a real reason to check.

A pizza town, by name at least. 55 of 279 takeaway names point to pizza, about one in five and the highest share of the 15 cities in this wave. Chinese (32) and fish and chips (21) come next, then Indian (14). (This is an estimate from names; 47% are unclassified.) For pizza shops, deals are everything, and running them through your own pizza ordering setup means each "2 large for £20" isn't losing a third of its value to an app.

The map: NE6, NE1 and the river

  • NE6 (60 takeaways): Byker, Heaton, Walker. Heaton has a large student and young-professional population, while Walker and Byker are family areas. Expect high, steady demand. A tight zone of about 1.5 miles covers most of the district.
  • NE1 (56): the city centre. Office lunches, Stowell Street, the Bigg Market and the Quayside. When the centre is slow, turn delivery off and leave collection on. This page does not list fixtures or grounds.
  • NE4 (40) and NE5 (34): the West End. Fenham, Elswick, Benwell and West Denton. Long east-west roads make it quick to drive across, so a slightly wider zone works here.
  • NE3 (34): Gosforth and Kenton. Larger average orders. A lower fee, or a higher minimum, can suit that district. There is no separate free-over threshold.
  • NE2 and NE7: Jesmond and High Heaton. Smaller pockets with a lot of student and professional demand.

The Tyne. Gateshead is a separate council on the south bank, reached by the Tyne Bridge, the Swing Bridge, the Redheugh and the High Level. If you want Gateshead customers, include NE8 to NE11 as a separately priced zone, and expect the bridges to add time at peak hours.

Half of Newcastle's takeaways are within 1.7 miles of the centre point and 99% within 5. You won't need a large radius. You need sensible prices per district, which Chefzi delivery zones handle by postcode district.

Late-night refreshment licensing

Selling hot food or hot drink to the public between 11pm and 5am needs a premises licence for late night refreshment under the Licensing Act 2003, issued by Newcastle City Council. This applies to takeaway and delivery from your premises. Busy night-time areas may face extra licensing scrutiny, so check before applying for longer hours. Set your online ordering to close at the time your licence ends.

Newcastle

Questions from Newcastle kitchens.

Should I deliver across the river to Gateshead?

Only as a separately priced zone, and only if your drivers can cross quickly at your busy times.

How do I handle a busy night in the centre?

Turn delivery off and leave collection on. To stop one district, remove that zone. There is no switch that pauses a single zone, and this page does not list fixtures.

What's the best deal structure for a pizza shop?

Whatever you choose, run it on your own ordering page so the margin stays with you. Put the deal in the item name and price. There is no separate half-and-half builder.

Do I need a licence to open until 2am?

If you serve hot food after 11pm, yes. Your premises licence must include late night refreshment for those hours.
