# Online ordering for Wolverhampton takeaways
Short answer: Wolverhampton's 285 takeaways have no single hotspot. The busiest postcode district, WV10, holds only 17%, and the trade is spread from Bilston and Wednesfield to Tettenhall and Penn. By name, fish and chips is the biggest group: 55 shops, about one takeaway in five. Hygiene sits right on the West Midlands average (57.8% rated 5), and almost every takeaway has been inspected. Chefzi gives you a commission-free ordering site with no setup fee, free migration and the first month free. Your own domain is included.
A chip-shop city
Our name-based estimate counts 55 fish and chip shops, then pizza (40), Chinese (30) and cafés (14). That's an estimate (43% of names don't match any cuisine), but a chippy share of 19% is higher than in any of the 19 places in our first set of city profiles. Cardiff came closest at 14%, and in Birmingham chippies make up about 10%.
Fish and chips is the hardest food to deliver well. Batter softens in a closed box, and the Friday teatime rush comes all at once. Two things help:
- Collection first. Let customers order ahead and collect, so the fryer works to a queue it can see. In Chefzi you set a pre-order lead time for the shop, and collection and delivery can have different hours. A chippy can take collection orders all session and deliver only in the evening, for example.
- A short delivery radius. Keep the main zone to the streets you can reach in about 10 minutes. Add a further zone with a higher minimum order if you want the trade.
There's more on menus and set-up on our fish and chip shop page.
Spread out, so plan by area
Only 54.7% of takeaways are within 2 miles of the centre point, but 95.7% are within 3. The city is a ring of district centres more than one middle. The FSA addresses point to the main strips:
- WV10 (49): Bushbury, Fordhouses and Heath Town. Stafford Road (10) and Cannock Road (7) to the north, plus Marsh Lane Parade (5).
- WV1 (43): city centre and Whitmore Reans, inside and just outside the ring road. Molineux and the University of Wolverhampton's city campus are here, so expect busy match days and term-time late orders.
- WV14 (41): Bilston. "Bilston" appears in 16 addresses. Bilston is the strongest district for hygiene: 75.0% rated 5 and none rated 0 to 2.
- WV2 (32): Dudley Road and Ettingshall. Dudley Road alone has 12 takeaways. It's the weakest district: 37.9% rated 5 and 17.2% rated 0 to 2.
- WV11, WV4, WV3, WV6: Wednesfield, Penn, Merry Hill/Finchfield and Tettenhall. Suburban centres with family orders. Linthouse Lane (WV11) and Penn Road (WV4) have the most takeaways.
With delivery zones you can draw your own district as the core zone and add neighbouring ones at a higher fee. Customers just over the city boundary in Walsall or Dudley may be closer to you than the far side of Wolverhampton, so draw zones by drive time, not by council area.
The paperwork gap
To get a 5, a business must score no more than 5 in each of the three areas an officer checks. Of the 114 rated Wolverhampton takeaways below a 5, 81.6% fell short on "confidence in management", the record-keeping, training and procedures part. That's the highest share of the eight cities in this set of pages. Only 39.5% fell short on hygienic food handling. In plain terms, many kitchens lose the top score on records rather than on cleanliness. A complete Safer Food, Better Business pack, daily checks signed off, allergen records and staff training notes are the least costly route from a 3 or 4 to a 5. Once you've fixed things, you can request a re-rating visit.
Licensing and display
Sticker display is voluntary in England. Hot food or hot drink sold between 11pm and 5am needs a premises licence covering late night refreshment under the Licensing Act 2003. In Wolverhampton, you apply to the city council's licensing team. Set your online ordering hours to match the licence.
