# Online ordering for Coventry takeaways and restaurants

Short answer: Coventry is the most takeaway-heavy city in this series (only Kirklees, a group of towns rather than a single city, leans further). It has 477 FSA-registered takeaways against 570 restaurants and cafés, almost one-to-one. 131 of those takeaways (27%) are still awaiting their first hygiene inspection, which points to a lot of new openings. Most of the trade sits within 3 miles of the ring road, led by CV6 (Foleshill, Radford, Holbrooks). Chefzi gives you a commission-free ordering site: 3 months free, then £19 a month for cash or no-card payments, or £29 a month with online card payments through Stripe.

What the Coventry data shows

A city that orders in. With 1.19 restaurant or café premises per takeaway, Coventry leans further towards takeaway than any other city on our list (Edinburgh is 2.9 and Brighton 4.0). That means plenty of repeat custom, and plenty of commission paid on it if it all goes through the apps.

Lots of new names, and strong ratings among the rest. More than a quarter of takeaways haven't been rated yet. Among those that have, 65.9% have a 5, well above the West Midlands average of 57.6%, so Coventry ranks 13th of 29 in the region. If you're new and waiting for an inspection, customers can't see a number for you yet. Make up for that with a clear menu, full allergen information and a direct way to reorder once they've tried you.

Chippies and pizza lead by name. Fish and chips (49) and pizza (45) are the most common cuisines in names, then Indian (34), Chinese (23), chicken (23) and cafés (19). This is an estimate; 55% of names aren't classified. CV6, around Foleshill Road, has many South Asian food businesses that trade under family names our filter misses.

Districts and delivery

Coventry is compact. Half the mapped takeaways are within 1.3 miles of the centre point and 94% within 3 miles, all inside or just outside the A4053 ring road and the main arterial roads.

  • CV6 (105): Foleshill, Radford, Holbrooks, Longford. The biggest cluster, at 22% of the city's takeaways. The CBS Arena is here too, so football, rugby and concert days block roads to the north. Plan collection-only windows on event days.
  • CV1 (84): inside the ring road. The city centre and Coventry University's campus. Lunchtime collections and late student orders. The ring road's closely spaced junctions make short trips across the centre slower than they look on a map, so give CV1 a short zone.
  • CV2 (65) and CV3 (46): east and south. Wyken, Walsgrave, Stoke and Cheylesmore. Steady family ordering, and a good fit for free delivery over a set order value.
  • CV5 (36) and CV4 (27): west. Earlsdon, Allesley, Canley and Tile Hill. The University of Warwick sits on the city's south-western edge. Term-time demand there is high, but the campus layout and the council boundary make it a zone to price on its own.

A good default for Coventry: your own district plus the neighbouring ones in a 1.5 to 2-mile core zone, then a priced outer ring. In Chefzi delivery zones you set this per postcode district.

Late-night refreshment licensing

Coventry City Council licenses late night refreshment under the Licensing Act 2003: supplying hot food or hot drink between 11pm and 5am, including takeaway and delivery from your premises. If you're a new business, check that your premises licence covers the hours you plan to trade before you switch on late-night online ordering. Then set your Chefzi hours to match.

How Chefzi helps Coventry takeaways

Chefzi gives your regulars a direct line: a branded menu and checkout, a restaurant website if you don't have one, card payments on the £29 plan, district-based delivery, collection, QR codes for your bags, and a kitchen app that rings until someone accepts. 0% commission, free for 3 months, then £19 a month for cash or no-card payments, or £29 a month with online card payments through Stripe. Questions from Coventry kitchens.

I've just opened and have no rating yet. Will that hurt online?

Some customers will check. Build trust with a clear menu, full allergen details and good photos, then add your rating as soon as it's published.

How do I handle CBS Arena event days?

Set longer prep times or collection-only for CV6 and nearby districts around the event, and turn delivery back on afterwards.

Should I deliver to the University of Warwick?

If term-time orders justify it, add it as its own zone with a minimum order. Campus drop-off points help.

Do I need a licence to sell after 11pm?

Yes, for hot food or drink: a premises licence that covers late night refreshment.
