# Online ordering for Nottingham takeaways and restaurants
Short answer: Nottingham's takeaways have some of the best hygiene results of any big English city: 78.7% are rated 5. Nearly three in ten of them trade in a single district, NG7, home to Lenton, Radford, Hyson Green and the University of Nottingham. That makes it a competitive, student-heavy market where a good rating is taken for granted and speed and price decide who gets the order. Chefzi gives you your own ordering site with 0% commission: 3 months free, then £19 a month for cash or no-card payments, or £29 a month with online card payments through Stripe.
What the Nottingham data means for you
When everyone has a 5, a 5 doesn't set you apart. Nottingham ranks 7th of 33 East Midlands councils on the share of 5-rated takeaways, and the average rating across the city is 4.65. In a market like this, a 5 sticker won't win customers over by itself, but a 3 will lose them. Put your rating on your ordering page, then compete on what customers can feel: delivery time, a menu that loads quickly, and fair delivery fees.
NG7 is the centre of gravity. With 122 takeaways, NG7 has nearly as many as NG1 (the city centre, 72) and NG8 (59) put together, and 1.7 times as many as NG1 on its own. It runs from the university's University Park campus through Lenton and Radford to Hyson Green and Forest Fields. Demand rises and falls with the university terms: very busy from late September to early December, and quieter over summer. Use the quiet months to build your list of direct customers among local residents, not just students.
Cuisine by name. Pizza (52) leads, then fish and chips (33), Chinese (25), chicken shops (23), Indian (19) and kebab (14). More than half of names give no cuisine signal, so treat this as a rough guide.
Delivery zones in a tight city
Nottingham's council boundary is tightly drawn. Half the takeaways are within 1.1 miles of the centre point, and all of them within 5 miles. Many places locals think of as Nottingham are in different council areas: West Bridgford (Rushcliffe), Beeston (Broxtowe), and Arnold and Carlton (Gedling). Your customers ignore those lines, so your zones should too.
- Student core (NG7, NG1, NG9 edge). Lots of small late orders. Set a minimum order of about £12 to £15 and keep delivery cheap to compete. Shared houses mean many orders to the same streets, which is efficient for drivers.
- North and west (NG5, NG6, NG8). Family estates with larger, earlier orders. They're good for a slightly wider zone and free-delivery thresholds.
- South of the river. The Trent forms the city's southern edge, and the bridges are the crossings. Crossing into West Bridgford (NG2) can be slow. If that area is worth it to you, price it as a separate zone. This page does not describe fixtures.
- NG11 (Clifton). Separated from the city by the river and joined by the tram. Treat it as its own zone, or leave it to local shops.
In Chefzi delivery zones you can mix districts from neighbouring council areas freely, for example NG7 + NG9 + NG2 at different fees.
Term-time planning
- Freshers' and welcome weeks: new students choose their regular takeaway within weeks. QR codes on your bags and flyers that link to your own ordering page are a direct way to reach them before the apps do.
- Exam season: late-night demand rises. Extend hours only if your licence allows.
- Summer: shorten your zones and focus on residential districts.
Late-night refreshment licensing
Serving hot food or drink to the public between 11pm and 5am is late night refreshment under the Licensing Act 2003, and it needs a premises licence from Nottingham City Council. Delivery from your premises is included. If you're near the city centre, check whether any special council policy affects late-night licences in your area before applying for longer hours. Then set your online ordering to stop at your licensed time.

Questions from Nottingham kitchens.
Can I deliver to West Bridgford or Beeston?
Yes. Add those postcode districts as zones. Council boundaries don't limit where you deliver.
What minimum order works for students?
Many shops use £12 to £15 with a low delivery fee. Test it and adjust. Chefzi lets you set it per zone.
Do I need to show my hygiene rating online?
In England it's voluntary, but in a city where most takeaways are rated 5, customers expect to see it.
How do I reach new students each September?
Use QR codes on bags, receipts and flyers that link to your own ordering page, plus a first-order offer you control.
