# Online ordering for Sheffield takeaways and restaurants

Short answer: Sheffield's takeaway trade is a suburban one. Only 33 of the city's 610 FSA-registered takeaways are in the S1 city centre. The biggest clusters are in S5, S6 and S2, out among the hills. That's why a good Sheffield ordering setup plans delivery by gradient and drive time, not straight-line miles. Chefzi gives you your own commission-free ordering site: 3 months free, then £19 a month for cash or no-card payments, or £29 a month with online card payments through Stripe.

What the Sheffield data says

Very few poor ratings. Only 2.9% of rated Sheffield takeaways are on 0, 1 or 2, half the English rate. Most of the rest sit on 3 or 4 rather than 5 (16.5% on 3, 22.8% on 4). For a Sheffield shop, getting from 4 to 5 is the realistic gain, and a 5 is worth showing on your menu page because only just over half of local competitors have one.

Neighbourhood shops, not a centre-of-town scene. S5 (Firth Park, Parson Cross, Shiregreen), S6 (Hillsborough, Walkley) and S2 (Heeley, Manor, Arbourthorne) each have more takeaways than the city centre. These are repeat-order areas where families order from the same place every Friday, which is the kind of custom that does not need a marketplace percentage.

What's on the menu (by name). Pizza (85) leads, then fish and chips (63, a strong showing that fits Sheffield's chippy tradition), Chinese (45), Indian (28), cafés and bakeries (25) and kebab (20). This is an estimate from business names; about half don't indicate a cuisine.

Delivering on seven hills

Sheffield's takeaways are more spread out than in most cities of its size. The median is 2.4 miles from the centre point, only 40% are within 2 miles, and you have to go to about 5 miles to reach 90%. Add the hills and a "3-mile radius" can mean anything from 8 minutes to 25.

  • Draw zones along the valleys. The main roads run along valley floors (the Don towards Hillsborough, the Sheaf towards Heeley), and journeys across the ridges between them are slow. A shop in S6 usually reaches S5 and S35 more reliably than Crookes and Broomhill (S10), even though those are closer as the crow flies.
  • Cycle and e-bike couriers struggle on the climbs. If you use them, keep their zones tight and mostly downhill from you. Leave longer runs to drivers.
  • Outlying S35 (Chapeltown, High Green, Stocksbridge). It has 29 takeaways of its own. Unless you're based there, give it a higher minimum order or leave it out.
  • Student pockets (S10, S11, S3). Late-evening demand is high around the university areas in term time, with lots of small orders. Set a sensible minimum order so delivery stays worth doing.

With Chefzi delivery zones you choose districts (for example S5 + S6 + S35 at different fees) rather than a single circle. Prep time is set from the kitchen app, so promised times stay honest when it's busy.

When S2 or S6 is busy

S2 and S6 are among the busiest takeaway districts in the register. Roads there can clog. This page does not list fixtures or grounds. If you know a busy window:

  • turn delivery off and leave collection on,
  • offer collection for a requested time,
  • shorten the districts you deliver to until the traffic clears.

Late-night refreshment in Sheffield

In England, supplying hot food or hot drink between 11pm and 5am is "late night refreshment" under the Licensing Act 2003, and it needs a premises licence from Sheffield City Council. Delivery and takeaway from your premises count. Your licence sets the latest time you can trade, so set your online ordering hours to match it and customers won't be able to order after your cut-off.

Sheffield

Questions from Sheffield kitchens.

How far should a Sheffield takeaway deliver?

Plan by journey time. Most shops do well with their own district plus the 2 or 3 they can reach within 20 to 25 minutes, then a priced outer zone.

Does a chippy need a late-night licence?

Only if you serve hot food after 11pm. Most chippies close earlier and don't need one. Kebab and pizza shops trading late usually do.

Can I offer collection only on matchdays?

Yes. Turn delivery off and leave collection on from the kitchen app, then switch back when the roads clear.

Is 4 a good hygiene rating?

It means "good". In Sheffield 57.7% of takeaways have a 5, so a 5 helps you stand out, and your council can advise on what's needed.
