Questions

Can a Mill Road kitchen run collection only, with no delivery at all?

Yes. Collection works on its own: the customer picks a time at checkout and the ticket reaches the kitchen in the Chefzi order app. Delivery zones, fees and minimum orders only come into play if you also deliver, so a small counter can start with collection and add delivery when it has the drivers.

The lunch queue is the problem at our station-side cafe. Can people order before they arrive?

Yes. Customers can order for a later slot inside the opening hours and cut-offs you set, so the 12:30 rush arrives as pre-orders with the bags already labelled. The order shows up in the same app you use for everything else.

Why does CB1 hold so many of the city's takeaways?

CB1 covers the station side and the city end of Mill Road, which is the tightest cluster of small kitchens in Cambridge: 41 of the 87 on the register. That is a count of premises registered with the Food Standards Agency, not a measure of how busy any one of them is.

What does Chefzi cost on the paid tiers?

£39 a month billed annually (£49 if billed monthly), everything included, per location and ex VAT. There is no setup fee and no commission on the order. The plans are set out on the pricing page.

More detail

Cambridge City has 87 takeaways against about 500 restaurants and cafés, with CB1 home to nearly half the takeaways.

Why it matters in Cambridge

Mill Road kitchens and city-centre cafés can take collection, delivery and table bookings from their own site, and send regulars offers by email without paying a percentage per order.

Where Cambridge takeaways are

By postcode district, the FSA register puts Cambridge takeaways in CB1 (41), CB2 (18), CB4 (15), CB5 (8), CB3 (1). Set delivery zones by the districts you actually drive, and charge more where the run is longer.

How Chefzi helps Cambridge food businesses

Mill Road is the spine of Cambridge's takeaway trade. From the city end, through Petersfield and over the railway bridge into Romsey, the independent kitchens sit within a few minutes' walk of one another. The CB1 station side around Station Square, the Cherry Hinton Road parade, and the small shops on Burleigh Street and Fitzroy Street fill in the rest of the map. A kitchen with its own regulars does not need a marketplace standing in the middle of that.

  • An ordering page that belongs to you. A mobile-first site built from the menu you already sell, on your own domain.
  • The ticket lands in the order app. Orders arrive in the Chefzi app on a phone or tablet you already have, with a prep time to accept or a reason to reject.
  • Zones drawn around the Cambridge run. A Mill Road kitchen and a Cherry Hinton one cover different ground, so delivery zones, fees and minimum orders are set per area. Collection is a separate switch, which suits the counters that would rather people walked in.
  • Tables on the same site. Table reservations for the sit-down side and QR table ordering for guests already seated use the same menu and the same app as the takeaway orders.
