Questions
Does a QR flyer for my ordering page need the bilingual statement?
If it also shows food, prices and a way to order without visiting, yes. That's publicity material under the 2016 Welsh rules.
What if a customer asks my rating on the phone?
Tell them. The statement printed on Welsh takeaway menus reminds customers they can ask.
How do Swansea's takeaway ratings compare?
40.5% of rated takeaways have a 5, against 54.2% across Wales and 61.8% in England. Swansea ranks 18th of 22 Welsh councils on that measure.
Is a re-rating visit free in Wales?
No. Welsh councils charge for re-rating inspections, and you must be displaying your current rating to request one.
More detail
Swansea's 256 takeaways must show their rating by law, and 27.9% are on a 3. FSA data, Welsh menu rules, Gower to Morriston zones, 0% commission ever.

# Online ordering for Swansea takeaways and cafés
Short answer: Swansea has 256 takeaways on the FSA register, and as in the rest of Wales, every one must display its hygiene rating by law. Printed menus that let people order must carry a bilingual statement too. Ratings here sit below the Welsh average: 40.5% of rated takeaways have a 5 (Wales 54.2%), and 60 of them, 27.9%, are on a 3. More than a third of the trade is in SA1, but the rest spreads from Mumbles to Morriston and out to Gorseinon. Chefzi gives you a commission-free ordering site with no setup fee, free migration and the first month free. Your own domain is included.
What Welsh law asks of a Swansea takeaway
These rules come from the Food Hygiene Rating (Wales) Act 2013 and regulations made under it. They're stricter than England's.
- Your sticker must be on show. Display your current rating at or near each customer entrance, where people can read it before they come in.
- Printed ordering materials need a statement. Since 28 November 2016, any printed menu or leaflet that shows food, prices and a way to order without visiting (by phone or online) must carry this wording:
> "Ewch i food.gov.uk/ratings i ganfod sgôr hylendid bwyd ein busnes neu gofynnwch inni beth yw ein sgôr hylendid bwyd wrth archebu. / Go to food.gov.uk/ratings to find out the food hygiene rating of our business or ask us for our food hygiene rating when you order"
It must be in a prominent place, at least 9 point in Times New Roman (not narrowed), with at least 3mm between lines. You may also print your actual rating, but only in the official format.
- Customers can ask for your rating when they order, and the statement reminds them of that. Make sure whoever answers the phone knows it.
For online ordering: the statement rule is written for printed publicity, so it applies to your door-drop menus and to any flyer with dishes, prices and a QR code to your ordering page. Many Welsh businesses add the same statement and a link to their FSA listing on their website as well. It isn't required online, but it's consistent, and it answers the question customers are entitled to ask.
Why so many 3s
A 3 means "generally satisfactory". To get a 5, a business must score no more than 5 in each of the three areas the officer checks. Of the 128 rated Swansea takeaways below a 5, 69.5% fell short on management (records, training, procedures) and 68.8% on hygienic food handling, with 57.0% on the premises. In Swansea, food handling is almost as common a shortfall as paperwork. That points to the basics: temperature checks, cleaning schedules, allergen controls, separating raw and ready-to-eat food, and writing it all down.
Re-rating works differently in Wales. All Welsh councils charge for a re-rating inspection, you have to be displaying your current sticker to ask for one, and the visit should happen within three months of your written request. Make sure you're ready, because the rating can go down as well as up.
By district, SA3 (Mumbles and Gower) scores highest, with 58.8% rated 5. SA2 (Sketty, Uplands) and SA5 (Penlan, Manselton) are lowest, at about 32%.
Districts and delivery
Swansea is spread out. Only 56.4% of takeaways are within 2 miles of the centre point, and about one in ten is more than 5 miles away. The Tawe, the bay and the Gower set the shape.
- SA1 (94): city centre, Sandfields, Mount Pleasant, Brynmill and Port Tennant. St Helens Road (14) is the busiest takeaway street in the city by this count, then Neath Road and Mansel Street. The Swansea.com Stadium in Landore and the university's Bay Campus are both in SA1.
- SA6 (37): Morriston and Clydach, up the Tawe valley. Woodfield Street in Morriston has 11 takeaways.
- SA4 (36): Gorseinon, Pontarddulais and Gowerton, to the north-west. A separate market from the city centre, with its own high streets.
- SA2 and SA5 (25 and 31): Sketty, Uplands, Cockett, Penlan and Manselton. Residential, with students near Singleton and family orders further up the hill.
- SA3 (19): Mumbles, West Cross and the Gower. Busy in summer, quieter in winter. Long runs out to the bays.
Rather than one radius, set delivery zones per area: your own patch at a low fee, neighbouring districts at a higher fee and minimum, and the far Gower left out unless you can make it pay. Each zone has its own delivery time, so customers see a realistic estimate.
Late night refreshment
The Licensing Act 2003 applies in Wales. Hot food or hot drink sold between 11pm and 5am needs a premises licence that covers late night refreshment, from Swansea Council's licensing team. Set your online ordering hours to match.
