Hull

Questions

Should I deliver across the river?

Only if you can keep your delivery times. Many Hull takeaways do better with one zone on their own side and a second, higher-fee zone across the river.

How do Hull's takeaway ratings compare?

69.9% of rated takeaways have a 5, against 60.5% in Yorkshire and the Humber and 61.8% in England, but 8.8% are rated 0 to 2 (regional figure 5.6%).

Is Hull the same council as the East Riding?

No. Cottingham, Hessle and Anlaby are in East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which has its own licensing and food teams. The figures on this page cover Hull City Council only.

When should I stop taking late orders?

At the time your licence allows for hot food. After 11pm you need late night refreshment on your premises licence.

Food Standards Agency figures for Hull City

These counts are from the Food Standards Agency open data, pulled on 20 October 2026. “Takeaway” means the FSA business type “Takeaway/sandwich shop”. Cuisine rows are a name-keyword estimate, not a census, and 50% of takeaway names were not classified. How ratings work, including appeals and re-inspections, is a separate guide.

# Online ordering for Hull takeaways and restaurants

Short answer: Kingston upon Hull has 362 takeaways on the FSA register, and its ratings are split. 69.9% of rated takeaways have a 5, second highest of 15 councils in Yorkshire and the Humber, but 8.8% are rated 0 to 2, well above the regional 5.6%. Customers here have a real choice between very good and poor, so your rating is worth showing. The trade divides across the River Hull, with 30% of takeaways in HU8 and HU9 on the east side. Chefzi gives you a commission-free ordering site with no setup fee, free migration and the first month free. Your own domain is included.

Two ends of the scale

Most Hull takeaways do well: 223 have a 5. But 28 are on 0, 1 or 2, and when a Hull takeaway misses the top score it tends to miss on everything. Among the 96 rated below 5, three-quarters fell short of "good" on the premises (75.0%), on management and records (74.0%) and on food handling (66.7%). An officer needs no more than 5 in all three areas to award a 5, so a mixed result is rarely a quick fix.

What that means online:

  • If you have a 5, show it, and link to your FSA listing from your ordering page. In a city where some customers have been put off by a low rating nearby, it answers the question before they ask.
  • If you're on 0 to 2, fix the basics before pushing online orders. More orders through a kitchen that isn't ready makes the next inspection harder, not easier. Your officer's report lists what to fix, and you can request a re-rating once it's done.

By district, HU7 (81.5% rated 5), HU1 (81.0%), HU4 (78.3%) and HU3 (75.5%) score highest. HU8 has the highest share of low ratings (14.3% on 0 to 2), followed by HU6 (12.1%).

East Hull and west Hull

The River Hull runs north to south through the city, and every delivery from one side to the other means a bridge crossing. Plan zones on each side separately.

  • West: HU5 (73), around Newland Avenue (17 takeaways), Beverley Road, Chanterlands Avenue and Princes Avenue. The biggest district, with students from the University of Hull (HU6, Cottingham Road) and late weekend demand. Short, cheap zones work.
  • West: HU3 and HU4 (54 and 26), along Anlaby Road (about 30 across both) and Hessle Road (24). The MKM Stadium, home to Hull City and Hull FC, sits off Anlaby Road. Match days fill these roads.
  • East: HU9 and HU8 (70 and 39), along Holderness Road (32 across both), Marfleet Lane and Southcoates Lane. Craven Park, Hull KR's ground, is in east Hull, so derby days put pressure on both sides of the river.
  • North: HU7 (32), Bransholme, Sutton and Kingswood. Residential estates with family orders and bigger baskets, on both sides of the river. Price it as an outer zone unless you're based there.

Hull is compact overall: 89.6% of takeaways are within 3 miles of the centre point and all are within 5. Distance is less of a problem than the river and the main roads at peak times. In Chefzi, delivery zones can be drawn on a map, so you can follow the river rather than a circle. Each zone has its own fee, minimum order and delivery time.

What Hull orders, by name

Pizza is well ahead: 63 takeaways have pizza in the name, about one in six. Then Chinese (33), fish and chips (32), chicken (16) and burgers (10). Half the names don't match any cuisine, so treat this as an estimate. For pizza shops, size and topping choices are modifiers with a minimum and maximum, so "choose up to 4 toppings" works as it should. More on the pizza takeaway page.

Rules to know

England doesn't require you to display your hygiene sticker, though the FSA encourages it in the window and online. Hot food or hot drink sold between 11pm and 5am needs a premises licence that covers late night refreshment (Licensing Act 2003), from Hull City Council. If you're opening a new food business, register it with the council's food team at least 28 days before you start trading. Keep your Chefzi ordering hours within your licensed hours.

How Chefzi works for a Hull takeaway

You get your own ordering site and, if you need one, a restaurant website built from your menu, on your own domain if you like. You can also embed ordering in the site you already have. Orders ring on the kitchen app until someone accepts or rejects them. Eat-in cafés can use QR table ordering.

Price: no setup fee, free migration and no commission on orders. Current offer: One plan at £39 a month per location, ex VAT: ordering website, your own branded app (Android & iOS), EPOS till, kitchen screen, SMS and email marketing (GDPR compliant) and loyalty rewards. 0% commission ever, no setup fee, free migration and one month free.
