Derby

Questions

My rating is from years ago. Can I get re-inspected?

If you didn't get a 5 and you've done the work the officer asked for, you can ask the council for a re-rating inspection. Some councils in England charge for it. Send evidence of the changes with your request.

How do Derby's takeaway ratings compare?

51.7% of rated takeaways have a 5, against 68.9% across the East Midlands and 61.8% in England. Derby ranks 31st of 33 East Midlands councils on that measure.

How far should a Derby takeaway deliver?

From a central shop, about 2 to 2.5 miles covers most of the city. Charge a higher fee for outer suburbs or the far side of the river.

Should I show my hygiene rating on my ordering page?

If it's a 5, yes. In a city where barely half of takeaways have one, it helps customers choose you.

More detail

Derby's 298 takeaways trail the East Midlands on hygiene (51.7% rated 5 vs 68.9%). FSA data, Normanton Road and city-centre zones, 0% commission ordering.

Food Standards Agency figures for Derby City

These counts are from the Food Standards Agency open data, pulled on 20 October 2026. “Takeaway” means the FSA business type “Takeaway/sandwich shop”. Cuisine rows are a name-keyword estimate, not a census, and 51% of takeaway names were not classified. How ratings work, including appeals and re-inspections, is a separate guide.

# Online ordering for Derby takeaways and restaurants

Short answer: Derby has 298 takeaways on the FSA register and they're packed in tight: 95% sit within 3 miles of each other's centre point. The surprise is hygiene. Only 51.7% of rated Derby takeaways have a 5, against 68.9% across the East Midlands, which puts the city 31st of 33 in the region. Its restaurants and cafés do far better (71.7%). For a takeaway that holds a 5, that's a real edge to show online. Chefzi gives you a commission-free ordering site with no setup fee, free migration and the first month free. Your own domain is included.

Why Derby's ratings lag

Three things stand out in the data.

  1. A lot of 3s. More than one in five rated takeaways (58) is on a 3, "generally satisfactory". That's a pass, but customers who check the FSA site before ordering will notice it.
  2. Paperwork is the main gap. An officer scores three areas, and a business needs no more than 5 in each to get a 5. Of the 131 Derby takeaways rated below 5, 74.0% fell short on confidence in management (food safety records, training and procedures), 65.6% on hygienic handling and 55.0% on the premises.
  3. Old ratings. 22.1% of rated takeaways haven't had a new rating for more than two years, and 11.8% for more than three. Only about a third (101) were rated in the last 12 months. A rating from 2022 may not reflect how you run the kitchen now.

What to do about it. If you're on a 3 or 4 and have fixed what the officer raised, you can ask Derby City Council for a re-rating inspection. The FSA's business guidance explains how. Some English councils charge for it, and your rating can go up or down. A new 5 is published as soon as the council uploads it. Ratings of 0 to 4 appear 3 to 5 weeks after the visit, to allow time for an appeal. Before you ask, make sure your Safer Food, Better Business diary is complete. In Derby's figures, that's the area most likely to cost you the top score.

Where Derby's takeaways are

  • DE1 (88): the city centre. Nearly 30% of the total, including 11 addresses at the Derbion shopping centre plus Osmaston Road, London Road and Traffic Street. Lunchtime collection, students and late trade. Only 46.2% of DE1 takeaways have a 5.
  • DE23 (65): Normanton, Pear Tree and Littleover. Normanton Road (17 takeaways) and Pear Tree Road (13) are the busiest food streets in the city by this count. 13.6% of rated DE23 takeaways are on 0 to 2, so a 5 on this strip really is a selling point.
  • DE24 (54): Osmaston, Alvaston and Sinfin. Osmaston Road (14) and London Road (13) carry on south from the centre. Derby County's Pride Park Stadium is in DE24, so expect slower roads around Pride Park on match and event days.
  • DE21 (45): Chaddesden and Spondon, east of the river, with Nottingham Road (13) as the main strip. Not one DE21 takeaway is rated 0 to 2.
  • DE22 and DE3 (29 and 9): Allestree, Mackworth and Mickleover, to the north and west. The University of Derby's Kedleston Road campus is in DE22.

Delivery set-up. Derby is compact: the median takeaway is 1.2 miles from the centre point and 90% are within 2.6 miles. A single radius of about 2 to 2.5 miles covers most of the city from a central shop. Use delivery zones to charge more for the outer suburbs, or for crossing the Derwent to DE21 if you're based on the west side. Each zone has its own fee, minimum order and delivery time.

What sells, by name

Pizza leads (41), then fish and chips (33), Indian (16), Chinese (16) and chicken (12). Our filter is name-based and leaves 51% of takeaways unclassified, so treat these as an estimate. Derby also has 11 dessert or shake shops by name, a late-evening trade that suits collection and short-hop delivery. For pizza menus with sizes and toppings, see pizza takeaways.

Late night refreshment and display

Showing your hygiene sticker is voluntary in England, but the FSA encourages businesses to show it in the window and online. Selling hot food or hot drink between 11pm and 5am needs a premises licence that covers late night refreshment (Licensing Act 2003). In Derby, that comes from the city council's licensing team. Set your Chefzi ordering hours to stop when your licence does.
