Adding online ordering to a Wix or Squarespace restaurant website in the UK
By Arslan Munir
This guide is for owners who built their site on Wix or Squarespace and now want customers to order food from it. Builder facts come from Wix's and Squarespace's own help and product pages, checked on 22 October 2026 and listed in the sources table. Both change their plans regularly, so check the current page before you buy anything. Chefzi isn't affiliated with either.
The three routes
| Route | What it means | Good when |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The builder's own ordering | Wix Restaurants Orders on Wix. Squarespace has no direct equivalent | You're on Wix, you're happy managing orders in Wix, and you want one supplier |
| 2. A separate ordering system on your existing site | An embed or a button on your Wix or Squarespace pages that opens a dedicated ordering page | You like your site, but want a kitchen-first ordering tool, or you're on Squarespace in the UK |
| 3. Move the whole site | Use the website that comes with your ordering system and stop paying for the builder | The builder site is mainly a menu and opening hours anyway |
Wix: what you get, and what to check
Wix's ordering tool is the Wix Restaurants Orders app. It works alongside the Wix Restaurant Menus app, which holds your dishes, sections and variations such as sizes. According to Wix's help centre, it lets you:
- take orders for pickup, delivery or dine-in, with at least one of the three switched on;
- choose ASAP or scheduled orders, set preparation times, and decide how far ahead people can order;
- set several delivery areas, each with its own fees, times and minimum order;
- add holiday closures, and block orders when you reach capacity;
- offer QR-code ordering at the table, with an optional table-number field;
- run up to five separate ordering pages, for example a main menu and a catering menu.
Wix also has a reservations tool. Its overview says you can approve bookings automatically or by hand, set party sizes and turnover times, add prepayment rules and use a visual floor plan.
Which plan. Wix says you can show your menu on a free site, but you must upgrade to take orders and payments. Its plan guide says the Light plan can't accept payments, so restaurants need Core, Business or Business Elite. Wix's plans page shows prices in different currencies depending on where you are, so check the UK price at checkout. The page we saw was in US dollars "for reference only".
What to weigh up:
- Two subscriptions in one. The Wix plan pays for the website and the ordering. If you later leave Wix, the ordering goes with it.
- Payments. Wix lists Wix Payments, PayPal and manual payments, depending on your country. Check which providers and card fees apply to a UK business before you go live.
- The kitchen side. Wix says its app notifies you about new orders. Before a busy Friday, test what actually happens in your kitchen: how loud the alert is, and what happens if the phone is in someone's pocket.
If all of that suits you, Wix's own tool is a reasonable choice. You don't need a second system.
Squarespace: what you get, and what to check
Squarespace's restaurant help page covers menus (a menu block whose text search engines can read) and QR codes that link to your digital menu. For reservations and orders, it lists third-party options:
- Allday Ordering, an extension that adds online ordering. Squarespace notes that extensions fall outside its support.
- ChowNow, which adds an ordering page to your navigation. Squarespace's ChowNow guide says ChowNow is currently available in the United States and Canada, so it isn't an option for a UK restaurant.
- OpenTable blocks and Tock blocks for reservations. Squarespace says Tock is a separate subscription.
- A plain navigation link to any other ordering service, which Squarespace suggests if you use an external service.
Which plan. Squarespace's code block guide says that to add JavaScript or an iframe, which is how most ordering widgets load, your site needs the Core, Plus or Advanced plan. On the Basic plan, you can still add a navigation link to your ordering page. That works on any plan, and it's often the better option on phones anyway.
Route 2 in practice: adding Chefzi to your builder site
Chefzi gives you a hosted ordering page (yourname.chefzi.co.uk, or your own domain connected in the portal) and a snippet that can show the whole menu inside a page or add a floating or inline Order online button. The embed Chefzi on the site you already have page shows both.
On Wix:
- In the editor, open the Add Elements panel, choose an embed, pick the option to embed a code snippet and paste the Chefzi snippet.
- Wix's help centre says its HTML elements are iframes and won't be responsive, even if the code you paste is. So open the page on a phone and check it. If the inline menu feels cramped, use a button in the header that opens your hosted ordering page instead.
- Wix says only HTTPS code and links will display. The Chefzi snippet and ordering page both use HTTPS.
- Publish, then place a real test order from your phone.
On Squarespace:
- On Core, Plus or Advanced: add a code block in HTML mode and paste the snippet, then save.
- On Basic: open the Pages panel, add a Link to your main navigation, call it something like "Order online" and paste your ordering page address.
- Put the same link in the footer and on your menu page, so customers never have to hunt for it.
On both: if your site still has an old GloriaFood button, take it out at the same time. Our guide to replace the GloriaFood button shows where builders hide that code.
What changes for the kitchen: orders arrive in the Chefzi app on a phone or tablet you already own, and it keeps ringing until someone accepts or rejects the order. If the device goes offline, Chefzi sends an SMS and then makes a phone call.
Route 3: drop the builder
A lot of restaurant sites on Wix or Squarespace are really a menu, opening hours, a phone number and some photos. If that's yours, you may not need the builder at all. Chefzi includes a restaurant website generated from your menu, which you can edit yourself (photos, text, opening hours and sections), with ordering built in.
Before you switch, check:
- Your domain. Where it's registered and who controls the DNS. If the builder registered it for you, you'll need to transfer it or point it elsewhere.
- Pages you'd lose. For example events, a blog or private-dining enquiries. Keep anything that brings in bookings or search traffic.
- Old addresses. Redirect old menu and contact page URLs to their new equivalents so that links and search results keep working.
Our guide to what a restaurant website costs compares builders, agencies and ordering platforms. What a restaurant website needs to take the order covers what the site itself should do.
Which route fits you
| Your situation | Sensible route |
|---|---|
| On Wix, paying for Core or above, happy with Wix's order alerts and payments | Route 1: Wix Restaurants Orders |
| On Wix, but want a kitchen app that rings until accepted, payments into your own Stripe account, or one tool for ordering, bookings and campaigns | Route 2: embed or button |
| On Squarespace in the UK | Route 2: Squarespace doesn't have built-in ordering, and ChowNow is US and Canada only |
| On Squarespace Basic and don't want to upgrade | Route 2 with a navigation link |
| Site is mostly a menu and opening hours | Route 3: use the website that comes with your ordering system |
Get found, then take the order
Wherever your ordering page lives, three things decide whether people use it:
- One clear link. Use the same ordering address on your site, your Google profile, Instagram and Facebook. Here's how to add the Order online link to your Google Business Profile.
- A readable menu. Write the menu as text, not a PDF or an image, so search engines can read it. Our restaurant website SEO guide covers titles, local pages and structured data.
- A reason to come back. Put a card with a QR code in every bag, share your table reservations link alongside it, and send offers to customers who've opted in.
If you're also on the delivery apps, every repeat order there pays commission, which averages up to 25% per order. The commission calculator shows what moving some of those orders to your own page is worth. If you're weighing up Square's own online store as well, see Chefzi vs Square Online.
What Chefzi includes
- An ordering page for delivery and collection, on a Chefzi address or your own domain, which you can embed in Wix or Squarespace or use as your whole website.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take food orders on a Wix website in the UK?
Yes. Wix Restaurants Orders works with the Wix Restaurant Menus app and supports pickup, delivery and dine-in orders. Wix's help centre says you need a Premium plan that supports payments to accept online orders. The Light plan doesn't accept payments, so it's Core or above.
Does Squarespace have built-in restaurant ordering?
Not as a standard feature. Squarespace's help centre points restaurants to third-party options: the Allday Ordering extension, ChowNow, OpenTable and Tock blocks, or a navigation link to another ordering service. Its ChowNow guide says ChowNow is currently available in the United States and Canada only.
Which Squarespace plan do I need to embed an ordering widget?
Squarespace says JavaScript or an iframe in a code block needs the Core, Plus or Advanced plan. On Basic, add your ordering page as a navigation link instead, which works on any plan.
Will an embedded ordering menu work on phones on Wix?
Wix's help centre says its HTML embed elements are iframes and won't be responsive, even if the embedded code is. Test the page on a phone. Often the cleanest option is an Order online button in the header that opens your hosted ordering page.
Do I have to leave Wix or Squarespace to use Chefzi?
No. You can keep your site and add Chefzi as an embed or a button. Chefzi also includes a restaurant website generated from your menu, so if you only kept the builder to show the menu, you could stop paying for it.
